We are pleased with the decision of the United States of America to join the Group of Friends of the Alliance of Civilizations, and to take part in the Rio Forum.
The Alliance of Civilizations, co-sponsored by the Turkish Prime Minister, is a United Nations initiative launched in 2005 to bolster mutual respect, harmony and tolerance among cultures. The Group of Friends brings together those countries and international organizations supportive of the Alliance of Civilizations’ goals and objectives. With the United States, membership in the Group of Friends has risen to 120.
The last annual Forum where the Alliance’s progress is reviewed at the highest level was held on 6-7 April 2009, in Istanbul. Turkey will attend the Third Forum, to take place on 28-29 May 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, with a delegation led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, also comprising Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Minister of State Prof. Dr. Mehmet Aydın.
This latest addition to the Group of Friends will make a major contribution to the enhancement and progress of the Alliance.
